Easily fix vignetting on the Firecrest 100mm MKI filter holder

If you have this slight problem showing up in your photographs when using a wide or ultra wide angle lens on the Formatt Hitech Firecrest 100mmm MKI filter holder this probably is the simple solution for you.

Don’t worry it really is a simple solution, it’s all down to how close your filter holder is to the front element of your lens the filter holder is then showing up in the image.

So what we need to do is bring it and the filters closer to the lens, so how do you do that?

Take my Nikkor 16-35mm F4 lens as an example, shooting with the standard holder kit it showed up some vignetting before I got a 77mm rotating ring adaptor. The shots with the standard kit can be seen below. These were all shot without a filter as it made no difference.

The vignetting was at it’s worst when the lens was focused on a subject that was very close to the lens. To highlight the vignetting as much as possible I focused the lens on a white background as close as possible to the front of the lens to really show the issue much worse than it would ever show up in the field.

The photograph below has all the same setting as the shot above only with profile correction enabled in lightroom, so it’s still the standard kit with the 82mm rotating ring adaptor.

As you can see on the above shot it’s a lot better after enabling the lens profile adjustment.

New rotating ring adaptor fitted.

The photograph below was shot with the same close focusing technique and with the new 77mmm rotating ring attached. this shot is without any profile correction enabled and as I mentioned above is set to the worst case scenario which would normally never occur in the field. If you look at the second shot below you will see the results.

So this is the same shot below with lens profile correction applied in lightroom and the vignetting is nearly completely gone. Again remember you would normally never be focusing this closely and this is the worst case possible scenario.

Setting up your focus as normal for a standard landscape image gives you the completely vignette free image below. So simply getting the rotating ring adaptor solves this slight issue by bringing the filter holder closer to the lens.

The photographs below clearly show the difference in the rotating rings below.

The new slimmer rotating ring is on the left and the older rotating ring with the 77mm thread adaptor is on the right.

As you can see the new rotating ring is a lot slimmer as there is no adaptor ring needed and it brings the holder that bit closer to the lens solving the issue of vignetting.
