Welcome to my 2 minute blog post where I quickly compare Luminar 4 vs Lightroom photography editing software in plain English.
The Luminar 4 vs Lightroom debate has been going on for a while now and I just want to simplify it for everyone.
So the best way to do this is to breakdown the main criteria people have for photography editing software namely cost, editing capabilities and other features like Cataloging, exporting etc..
Just pause for a second and consider how utterly fantastic it is that Luminar 4 can more than compete with lightroom. Lightroom is without doubt the king of editing software for the vast majority of photographers but it's reign could soon be coming to an end.
Now before we go any further I will say that everyone is going to have a different take on editing software so possibly the best way for you to do this yourself is to download a trial of Luminar 4 and try it out for 2 weeks yourself. Click the link below for your free 2 week trial.
I should also mention the link below is an affiliate link so if you go onto to buy the product I get a slight commission from it but I bought and paid full price for both these editing software packages and the slight commission won't change my mind on which on is best.
Or try Lightroom via the creative cloud link below.
Luminar 4 is nearly one third of the price of Adobe Lightroom to buy, that's it you own it outright then, no renting and no ongoing costs. So that's a huge win for Luminar 4. Most photographers end out renting Photoshop and Lightroom for about €12.99 a month so over 3 years that's a staggering €467.64 where as you can buy Luminar 4 for under €100.- The price for Luminar 4 varies depending on what offer is on at the time. If you click here you will see the latest price and I can also offer you $10.- or €10.- off with discount code HAYES10 click here to see how to add the promotional code, there is a trick to it.
Editing and which one is better?
Now that's a hard one to answer as they both have huge plus points.
So I am going to break this down into three sections, Speed, facilities and finally quality so you can decide for yourself which one is best for you.
Lightroom is fast and very responsive on a fast computer of course. Where as Luminar 4 has a bit more lag on it.
So for the speed mercahnts out there Lightroom wins this hands down with near instantaneous results compared to the half second to one second lag of Luminar 4 when adjusting sliders etc.. If you are not in a crazy rush like me with say 300 photographs to edit for a client then Luminar 4 works really well. If you are using editing software on a professional basis then just skip to the end of the blog post and see what choice I have made between the two.
For pure editing and with no budget constraints I would go for Lightroom over Luminar 4 personally but then again Lightroom is more of a raw editing program where as Luminar 4 has AI capabilities for both Landscape and also portraiture photography.
You can also use layers in Luminar 4 including luminosity masks and different blend modes which is more like editing in Photoshop.
Did I even mention the AI sky replacement tool in Luminar 4 or the AI skin enhancer & Portrait enhancer.
Not only can you do these in seconds but you with the AI augmented sky tool you can also add Birds, Rainbows, the moon etc... all in seconds. Yes that may be more of a gimic than anything else but what is nice is the AI sunrays tool for adding in yes you guessed it sun rays.
Then there is also the AI structure slider for defineing edges and adding a bit of punch and definition to your images also.
Now that all adds up to a huge and convincing win for Luminar 4 vs Lightroom.
For overall versatility and facilities Luminar 4 has this by a long shot.
Is there a difference in the quality of the edited images?
Well to me the answer is definitely no. I have edited the same files in both programs and while they may not be edited exactly the same the output quality to my eyes was identical.
So on the editing front it has to be said Luminar 4 seems over all to be the better option, again this is relative to your exact needs so please keep that in mind.
Cataloging and features
Ok, so both programs offer cataloging but it has to be said the Lightroom cataloging system is far more comprehensive than the Luminar 4 one.
With smart catalogs and the option to bulk keyword your images it's a far more professional system.
Even when it comes to exporting images from lightroom you have far more options again including watermarking your image which Luminar 4 can't do as of yet.
So who wins for me personally on the Luminar 4 vs Lightroom debate and if I had to only pick one then Lightroom still wins out for me but only because of its processing speed and its extensive professional cataloging features.
I still have both bits of software and use them both frequently, I use Luminar 4 as a plugin for Lightroom and Photoshop and wow that works so very well.
For any professional photographers out there that is what I would recommend.
Again you can download the trial below and please do give it a go it might really surprise you. I know it really surprised me.
